Meloy wrote and sponsored the open-meetings and public-records laws that implemented the Montana 1972 constitution’s right-to-know provisions. He has spent more than 50 years practicing law in the state and has worked on numerous court cases advocating for and defending open government in Montana. He served in the Montana Legislature from 1975-1979 and won the Montana Free Press Award in 2003, from the UM School of Journalism and Society of Professional Journalists. In his spare time, among other things, he coached the Helena High girls’ soccer team to two state AA championships.
